I don’t know about you, but my bedroom always seems to be the last room in the house to be finished. I’d rather spend the time, energy, and money on the areas that we all use as a family. The living room is usually number 1, followed by the kitchen, and then the kids bedrooms. But you know what? That’s not really fair! When I really thought about it, I realized that I spend a whole lot of time in my room. Obviously sleeping, but it’s where we also snuggle down in bed to read stories, where I get ready in the morning, where I fold my laundry, where I watch old episodes of How I Met Your Mother on my laptop when my husband is working. Or Gilmore Girls. Or Friends. And I deserve a pretty room!
I really like white because it always feels fresh and clean to me. If you do it right, if feels cozy instead of sterile. My room is still definitely a work in progress, because the bed I really want is thousands of dollars, and I am working on a budget here! I sometimes dream about the room I would have if money were no object, but I do enjoy the challenge of finding things that I love at a discount, or even second hand. Consignment is our friend!
I love all the white in here because I feel like I’m in a really cozy and clean space. I think I use the word cozy a lot. Like a lot. It was one of my son’s first words (although he said it like “go-way!” and we thought he was telling us to go away until we realized what he was saying!). My lovely friend made these awesome scrabble pillows as a gift for me and they’re basically perfect in my room. I chose a sheer curtain because It’s a frosted window so you can’t see in from the outside, and I love the natural light. The headboard was free (!) and I just bought new fabric and recovered it. With a staple gun. Because although I can’t sew, stapling things is easy and weirdly enjoyable. And the picture. I love that picture. Paris is at the top of our list as a couple of places we are dying to visit. I feel like hanging that picture above my bed is a little like writing out your goals. I see it every day and I’m reminded of the things I need to to to make that dream happen!
Again with the white. I know. It’s just pretty, right? But I love the little pops of colour here with the flowers and the jewelry box. That subway art has meaning for us too. A few years ago, my family embarked on a crazy journey. We lived in our RV full time for 6 months while we travelled the continent. It was incredible (but more on that later). We bought this canvas and proudly hung it in the tiny bedroom of our motorhome. We didn’t have a lot of art on the walls, but I looked at this every night as I was falling asleep. My favourite line is “Create memories you will tell your grandchildren about”. It’s just beautiful to me, and that’s how we try to live our lives. Adventurous but stable. Impulsive but grounded. Loving and fun happy. That’s what this canvas means to me. I like to purge, but I will never get rid of this.
I love to decorate with beautiful handmade gifts from my children. This was a mother’s day gift and I truly and honestly love it. I keep jewelry in here, my rings and earrings that get used regularly. It’s a wonderful everyday reminder of a loving child.
This one too. I keep flowers in it on my bedside table. I little pop of beauty with a note from my boy. It’s these sentimental things that truly hold the most value to me. I love my bedroom. I love spending time in there. I love when my littles snuggle in bed with us in the morning. (Every single morning.) I remember lying in my parents bed with my mom and feeling safe and cozy (see? my favourite word) and I’m so happy to be on the other side of it, creating a warm place for my kids too.
